About the Puja

Why Devotees Travel Across India for Puja

Many families discover the concept of ‘Pitra Dosh’ while attending to other matters, such as matching Kundali before a wedding, consulting an astrologer during difficult times, or visiting one who casually points out this affliction alongside other observations. Some families may have heard this term from their elders and remained confused about it for years. Others learn about it for the first time only when they cannot find any other explanation for the circumstances unfolding in their lives.

Whatever your reason for coming here, the answer to this question should be clear and honest. Pitra Dosh is not a punishment or a judgment. This is a special position in the birth chart which indicates that there is some unfinished work or ‘unresolved karma’ related to the deeds of ancestors. If properly resolved through Vedic rituals like Pitru Dosha Puja, it can bring real relief to both the departed souls and the living family.

Trimbakeshwar, home to one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India and the sacred source of the Godavari River, is one of the most spiritually powerful places in India for this ritual. Families from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and other regions visit this site, as it holds immense significance for specific ancestral worship rituals.

Understanding the Dosha

What is Pitru Dosh?

In Vedic astrology, your birth chart maps the planetary positions at the exact moment of your arrival in the world. Among those nine planets, the Sun represents ancestry and the paternal lineage. When the Sun conjuncts Rahu or Ketu, the shadow planets, or when the ninth house (the house of ancestors) comes under malefic influence, the result is known as Pitru Dosh.

The word “Pitru” means departed ancestors, especially ancestors on the father’s side, although the Vedic tradition recognizes the deeds of ancestors from all directions. “Dosh” means imbalance or deficiency. Combined, “Pitra Dosh” means that something related to ancestors remains unfulfilled, such as a spiritual debt that has not been repaid, a prayer that has not been answered, or a spirit that is waiting for a proper funeral and is now causing difficulties in the lives of living family members.

Pitru Dosha is considered to be one of the frequently identified doshas in Vedic astrology. Having it in your chart is not unusual, and it does not mean your life is destined to be difficult. What this actually means is that to remove its root cause, a special remedy, ‘Pitra Shanti Puja,’ is required.

Root Causes

What is the cause of Pitra Dosh?

Pitru Dosh can have both astrological and karmic origins, and often both are present together. A Jyotishi can identify it in the kundali, but understanding the underlying cause helps you approach the remedy with greater clarity.

Missed Shraddha Rituals

Annual Shraddha (Pitru Paksha rites) is not performed for departed ancestors for multiple years, leaving them without the offerings owed to them.

Incomplete Last Rites

Ancestors who did not receive proper Antyesti (funeral rites) at the time of death due to distance, circumstances, or tradition not being followed.

Unfulfilled Ancestral Wishes

Elders who passed with unresolved wishes, broken promises, or relationships that were never repaired before death.

Planetary Configuration at Birth

Sun conjunct Rahu or Ketu in the kundali, or malefic planets influencing the ninth house, the house of ancestors and father.

Tarpan Not Offered

Not performing Tarpan (ritual water offerings) for ancestors during Pitru Paksha or on Amavasya days as tradition prescribes.

Disrespect Toward Elders

Actions during an ancestor’s lifetime, including neglect, broken commitments, or unresolved conflict that left them at peace.

Puja Procedure

Step-by-Step Pitru Dosh Puja Process

Pitru Dosh Puja is a one-day ritual that begins during the Brahma Muhurta (early morning hours). Here is how this puja is performed:

1

Ritual Bath in the Godavari

The Puja begins at the Godavari River. Devotees take a ritual bath as a symbolic purification before the puja begins.

2

Sankalpa — Stating the Intention

The Pandit conducts the ‘Sankalp,’ in which the devotee’s name, gotra (lineage), birth details, and the purpose of the puja are formally stated. This connects the puja to that particular ancestor-lineage.

3

Ganesh Puja

To ensure that religious rituals are completed without any obstacles, Lord Ganesha is invoked first. No Vedic ritual begins without this invocation.

4

Navagraha Puja

In this, all the nine planets are addressed, thereby pacifying the Sun, Rahu and Ketu which cause Pitra Dosha and establishing overall balance of the planets

5

Pind Daan

Rice balls (pindas) are offered to the ancestors; this is a key Vedic tradition intended to provide nourishment and spiritual merit to souls residing in Pitri Loka (the realm of ancestors). This is the main part of Pitru Dosh Puja

6

Tarpan in the Godavari

At this place, water mixed with sesame seeds and flowers is offered directly to the ancestors in the holy Godavari River, an act of deep spiritual significance.

7

Pitru Stotra and Mantras

The Pandit performs special prayers for the ancestors, recites the Pitru Stotra and Vedic mantras, so that the departed soul may receive blessings and liberation.

8

Havan for Pitra Shanti

A fire ritual (Agni-Yajna) involving special offerings is performed for the peace of the ancestors, and the ritual concludes with the purifying energy of the sacred fire.

9

Aarti, Dakshina, and Guidance

The ceremony concludes with Aarti and Prasad. Guruji gives personalized guidance for further procedures as per your family’s situation.

Auspicious Timing

Best Time (Muhurat) to Perform Pitru Dosh Puja

The Pitru Dosh Puja can be performed at any time during the year; however, certain specific dates hold greater spiritual significance for rituals related to ancestors. If your schedule permits, it is advisable to plan the puja for one of these times:

Pitru Paksha

The 16-day fortnight dedicated to ancestors (usually Sept–Oct). The most auspicious period for any ancestral ritual.

Amavasya

New moon days, especially Sarvapitri Amavasya (the final day of Pitru Paksha). Powerful for Pitru Dosh remedies.

Ashwin Month

The lunar month of Ashwin is specifically associated with ancestral rites in the Vedic calendar.

Brahma Muhurta

The puja traditionally begins at Brahma Muhurta, approximately 90 minutes before sunrise on Day 1.
